Sundquist Questions Mitrano After Contradictory Statements on Her Residence

Last week, Chairman Frank Puglisi of the Cattaraugus County Democratic Party questioned congressional candidate Tracy Mitrano’s viability against Republican incumbent Tom Reed.

In response, Democratic congressional candidate Eddie Sundquist released the following statement:

“I share many of the same concerns as Chairman Puglisi. It is critical that we have a representative that is transparent and accountable to constituents in this district.

Where you call home should be a simple question for any elected official.”

Recently filed public documents indicate Ms. Mitrano sold a home in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts originally purchased in January of 2016. Furthermore, an affidavit, sworn under penalty of perjury, states Ms. Mitrano was making her home in Massachusetts her primary residence. A copy of the public documents from the Hampden County Registry of Deed may be downloaded here.

Legal documents indicating Ms. Mitrano’s residence as Massachusetts while also claiming a primary residence in New York, and receiving a tax benefit, raise significant questions and serious legal ramifications.

Sundquist continued, “In the interest of transparency to voters, I would ask Ms. Mitrano to respond to the following questions:

  1. For the last two years, where have you considered your primary residence?
  2. Have you received more than one tax benefit from a primary residence in the past two years?
  3. Your home in Ithaca, New York, has received a NY STAR tax reduction on school taxes for the past several years. If there is any other primary residence, why have you not notified New York State in accordance with state law?
  4. If the home in Massachusetts was not intended to be your primary residence, why did you sign an affidavit attesting it was? Or why did you not file a corrective affidavit?
  5. Will you release your last 5 years of tax returns to corroborate the answers to these questions?”

Where Mitrano resides has been a question throughout the Congressional campaign. In an op-ed in January, she claimed she lived in Ithaca for the last 30 years. In a blog post from 2016, she seems to make it clear she lived in Massachusetts at the time (where she worked for the University of Massachusetts at Amherst). Yet in another letter to absentee voters the Mitrano campaign sent out, she claims to live in Penn Yan.

In a feature last week that ran front page in the Jamestown Post-Journal, an excerpt reads:

“Mitrano mentioned she is the only candidate who has resided in the western, center, and eastern areas of the district, making her a suitable representative of the people she has lived around.”

Puglisi’s letter spoke to that statement being a lie, as Mitrano has never claimed ties to Allegany, Cattaraugus, or Chautauqua counties.

The Mitrano campaign refused to comment in response.

Will Tom Reed Ever Stand with his Constituents?

Yesterday, the Trump administration argued in a brief that Obamacare’s protections for preexisting conditions should be ruled unconstitutional.

In response, Democratic Congressional Candidate Eddie Sundquist issued the following statement: “I call on Congressman Reed to oppose the administration’s blatant attack on healthcare coverage for millions of Americans. He must defend the preexisting conditions coverage for 289,000 of his constituents. As I have said many times along the campaign trail healthcare is a right, not a privilege, and it must be protected as such.”

RELEASE: Congressional Candidate Eddie Sundquist Releases Tax Returns, Calls for Greater Transparency in Government

Today, Democratic Congressional Candidate Eddie Sundquist voluntarily released the past 5 years of his tax returns, in an effort to encourage more transparency from candidates seeking public office.

In a statement released today, Democrat Eddie Sundquist said:

“It is important that my future constituents know my finances, which is why I have released the past five years of my tax returns. As public officials, it is our responsibility to be as transparent as possible, and let the people we will be representing know of any potential conflicts of interest. Ultimately, we are accountable to our constituents, so they should be given as much information as possible to make an informed decision on who is best to represent them.

This release of his tax returns follows on Sundquist’s proposal for the creation of a New Leaders Caucus that would have at its core a call for term limits on party leadership positions and new proposals for tax transparency from all federal candidates. Today he elaborated on both issues, calling specifically for:

  • Legislation that requires congressional candidates to release the past five years of their tax returns
  • A 6 year-term limit for Democratic Caucus leadership in Congress, allowing for a broader array of voices and responsive leadership

Sundquist continued:

“I call on my Democratic primary opponents to join me in this effort and help ensure the next representative in NY-23 fights for the people here, not special interests in Washington.

Washington DC is fundamentally broken and dysfunctional. I believe strongly that a term limit of leadership will make the Democratic Party and Congress as a whole stronger,  more inclusive, and more responsive to the many challenges we face today.

With great diversity in the coalition of Democrats running for office nationwide, it is important that new voices are elevated. We cannot let those with the passion to fix problems they see in their communities be beat down by the status quo in DC. Institutionalizing fresh ideas within the Democratic Caucus will be a great step forward in that direction, and allow for a new generation of leadership to flourish.”

RELEASE: Democratic Congressional Candidate Eddie Sundquist Won’t Support Nancy Pelosi for Speaker, Launches New Leaders Caucus

In an email to supporters today, Democratic Congressional candidate Eddie Sundquist made it clear he would not support longtime Democratic House leader Nancy Pelosi in a leadership vote if he wins the 23rd Congressional
district’s election in November, citing the need for a new generation of leadership in Congress.

In the email, Sundquist graciously thanked Minority Leader Pelosi for her tenure:
“Leader Pelosi has been a remarkable voice and leader for the Democratic Party for over a decade. Her incredible efforts on bills such as the Affordable Care Act show the positive impact she had on the lives of millions of families in this country. With a new series of challenges facing our country and the Democratic Party, I believe it is time for new
leadership and a fresh perspective.”

Sundquist went on to announce the launch of a New Leaders Caucus in the House:
“We face new and dangerous threats. Democracy is under attack in ways unimaginable 10 years ago. Our economy is facing new challenges that few in Congress fully understand, whether we are talking about data privacy, the regulation of mobile apps, the future of work and healthcare and retirement for today’s teenagers. And at the same time Donald Trump’s administration has injected corruption and nepotism into every corner of Washington, DC.

It’s time for a new caucus in Congress that focuses squarely on building political power for real change in order to confront the challenges of today and tomorrow.  There is a whole generation of people, young folks, whose voices go unrepresented in Congress. It is time for a generation of new leaders to stand up for the future of the American Dream.

On the campaign trail, I frequently talk about how we need a new generation of leadership in Washington. This caucus is how I plan to follow through.” Sundquist added that more details were to come about his vision for the New
Leaders Caucus in the coming weeks. To learn about the core tenets of this group, please visit our website here

Standing up for LGBTQ Youth: National Conversion Therapy Ban

I want to talk to you about an issue that often goes unnoticed–the dangerous practice of conversion therapy. Conversion therapy is when LGBTQ youth are forced into a program that tries to change their sexual orientation or gender identity, a practice that has been discredited by every major medical and mental health organization in the country.

While there have been a number of municipalities in New York that have banned this destructive practice, conversion therapy is still alive and well in the United States. That is why today, I am announcing my support for a nationwide ban on conversion therapy.

Check out my video announcing my commitment to a nationwide ban on this destructive practice.

While many of you know I am an openly gay candidate, I don’t bring it up often, knowing my sexual orientation isn’t imperative to solving the biggest issues facing the 23rd District today; jobs, healthcare, and solving the opioid crisis.

Now is time for conversion therapy to end, being not only important to the LGBTQ community but to families across the nation.

The impacts are clear for LGBTQ youth. A study at San Francisco State University found that LGBTQ youth who were highly rejected by their families were 8 times more likely to attempt suicide, 6 times more likely to report high levels of depression, and be 3 times more likely to have HIV or an STD.

Will you join me in the fight to ban conversion therapy programs nationwide?

Please donate to our campaign today to help end conversion therapy programs nationwide.
